Ethan Basic Flixel Tutorial
November 17, 2009 by Ethan Category: Tutorials Flash

I decided to post a tutorial explaining how to use the classes I mentioned in this post. It won’t be a complete game, but it covers how Flixel uses animation, collision, tilemaps, and particle emitters.

**EDIT** It is important to note that this version of Flixel is 1.25. It may not be compatible with the current Flixel version. As I write this, 1.52 is current, but it has been changing rapidly lately.

If you haven’t already installed FlashDevelop and Flixel, you can get FlashDevelop here, and Emanuele Feronato has a post about installing and running Flixel here.

Once you have Flixel working and you can run the Mode demo project that comes with the installation of Flixel, you’ll want to make a new Flixel project.  So in FlashDevelop: Project->New Project,  select AS3 Project template, give the project a name (FlixelTutorial), and check the “Create directory for project” box.

Ethan Pixel Art: The Journey Persists
November 12, 2009 by Ethan Category: Development Art

This is just a little update on how the pixel art has been progressing, and it has been progressing quite well!

I’ve graduated to making little animations, and I’m pleased with how they have turned out. Below is just a hodgepodge of characters that may or may not appear in a game someday. I started with the wizard. But what good is a wizard without spells? So I made a fireball and fire wall. And what good are fireballs without enemies to blow up? Naturally the spear dude and slug ensued.

Ethan Who Wants 10 Grand?
November 06, 2009 by Ethan Category: Game News

Kongregate along with Stride gum is hosting a new contest with a hefty $25,000 in prizes split 4 ways. Grand prize is $10,000! What’s the catch? There really isn’t one, but you do have to submit an unreleased game and be a U.S. citizen. All submissions are still the property of the developer and can still be sponsored by another site.

The theme is Endurance, which is pretty vague. They must be hoping for a variety of different types of games and genres, and I am sure uniqueness and creativity will go a long way here.

Sounds like a good opportunity to make some cash and a good game. The deadline is December 28th, so that’s less than 2 months from now. Better get crackin! 1-2-3-go!!

Ethan What Can Flixel Do For Me?
November 05, 2009 by Ethan Category: Development Code

I’ve recently started digging around inside the Flixel libaries written by Adam Atomic. I’m quite impressed so far with its usefulness and simplicity. There are only a dozen or so actionscript files, and most are pretty straightforward.

Steve Review: Obechi
November 05, 2009 by Steve Category: Game Reviews

For our first review of a game I decided to review Obechi. I have been a big fan of Boomshine and spend a good deal of my time playing that, so my hopes were high for Obechi to be great.

Ethan Pixel Art: A Beginner’s Tale
November 03, 2009 by Ethan Category: Development Art

I by no means possess the skills to make high quality art, but I have always liked the idea of being able to develop quality games by myself without having to depend on a dedicated artist. Granted, some games do really well without any type of artistic touch, but these are few and far between. A fun game made from squares and circles is even better with some eye candy.

So in an attempt to improve my abilities, I’ll be regularly participating in pixel art exercises to see what I can come up with. If I’m satisfied with the outcome, I’ll probably put it in a game. I’m starting with creating some little creatures… here are a couple that I have so far.

Ethan Lessons Learned: My First Games
November 03, 2009 by Ethan Category: Development Design

Flash has been a hobby of mine for nearly 1 year now. I started back in January ’09 to keep my coding skills sharp (relative term) and to have some fun. I had been working a design job for a few months after I graduated from school, and I could already feel my brain leaking useful bits of “how to code good” information.
